2014년[제1권 제2호] 밀의 경제윤리

밀의 ‘정치경제학’은 경제현상에 숨겨져 있는 윤리적 요인들을 포함하고있다. 노동, 토지, 자본의 생산성도 경제윤리에 따라서 다르게 나타난다. 노동자와 농부의 자립정신은 근면한 삶을 유도하고, 생산성을 향상시킨다. 자본은 미래 가치를 위해서 현재 가치를 희생하려는 의지의 강도에 따라서 다르게 축적된다. 사람들 간의 신용은 은행 설립을 가능하게 만든다. 이로 인하여 공동체에서 자본의 활용도가 높아지고, 경제순환이 향상된다. 공정한 보상과 기회균등의 원칙은 사유재산제도와 상속을 정당화 시킨다. 한편사회 일반의 편의에 따라서 사유재산과 상속은 제한될 수있다.
밀은 윤리적 행위의 판단 능력이 직관이 아닌, 이성에 기초한다고 본다. 윤리적 삶을 유도하는도덕 감정은 주관적이고, 경험에 기초한다. 윤리는선천적이 아니라 후천적으로, 행위에 대한 이성적 판단들을 기초로만들어진다. 경제윤리는 긍정적 경제행위와 경제발전을 도모하는 가치관들의 집합체이다.
밀은 유럽 사회가 당시 중국이나 다른 사회들보다 발전한 이유를 도덕과 종교의 차이에서찾고 있다. 그는 종교개혁으로 인한 변화들이 유럽에서 문명사회 건설을 위한 인권, 사명감, 자유, 평등 등의 가치관을 확립하는데 기여했다고 본다. 그러나 그는하나님의계시와 영적 세계를부인하고, 돈 중심의 사고방식을 옹호하면서, 기독교인들로부터외면당하기도 한다. 밀의 경제윤리는 현실과 경험을 강조하면서, 자본주의 사회의경제윤리를 확립하는데 기여했다고􀀁 평가된다.

The Principles of Political Economy of John Stuart Mill includes ethical factors; the virtue of self-dependence increases the productivity of labor. The attitude of emphasizing the importance of future value determines the level of capital accumulation. The trust establishes the credit system in society and increases the utilization of capital. The justification of private property and inheritance is based on the principles of equal opportunity and of fair compensation. The spirit of uniformity of thoughts, feelings and actions hinders the variety of intellectual points of view and the moral progression.
The moral feelings are not innate, but acquired. The judgment of ethical conduct is based on reason rather than intuition. The ethics reflects the requirements of Humankind and society.
Mill mentions the Christianity as the cause of different developments between Europe and China. The Reformation in Europe increases the value of human rights and changes the society with more freedom. However, Mill’s thought about the material oriented life is criticised by most Christian people. Mill has contributed to the establishment of economic ethics of capitalism by emphasizing the reality and the experience.
