2015년[제2권 제1호] 카이퍼 경제론의 기본요소

개혁주의 기독교의 사회문제 참여의 중요한 사례를 남긴 카이퍼가 당대의 다양한 경제문제들을 이해하고, 그에 대한 대안을 제시함에 있어서 어떠한 요소를 그의 사고의 기초로 삼고 있었는지를 살핀다. 카이퍼 시대 네덜란드에서는 학교문제, 노사갈등문제, 식민지 경영문제, 지방자치 문제, 재정체계 문제 등이 중요한 경제문제였고, 현실정치지도자로서 카이퍼는 개혁주의 기독교적 입장에서 이 문제에 대해서 그의 많은 글과 연설을 통해서 기본적 시각을 밝히고 구체적 대안을 제시하였다. 그는 경제학자는 아니었기에 이 문제들에 대해서 엄밀한경제학적 고찰을 한 것은 아니었지만, 자신의 세계관에 기초해서 나름대로 체계적인 사고를 전개하였다. 이 논문에서는 여러 경제문제에 대한 그의 언설(言說)에서 공통적으로 나타나는 요소들이 무엇이었는 지를 밝히고, 이런 요소들이 이루는 체계가 당대의 다른 경제학적 사고체계와 어떻게 다른지를 살피고자 한다. 또한, 그의 사고체계가 현대의 경제문제에 대해서 어떤 시사점을 줄 수 있는지를 살피고자 한다.

Though Kuyper was not an economist, he conveyed considerably systematic ideas on economy. He criticized the liberal ideas of Adam Smith for sharing the core ideas of Frensch revolution, which was, according to his view, anti-Christian, as well as for being responsible for the miserable socio-economic situation in the late 19th and the early 20th century. He criticized Marx s ideas also for its unrealistic character that did not recognize the sinfulness of human beings. Kuyper named two categories of his basic principles for understanding the areas of politics at the last part of his Ons program . The core of the first category, formal principles, consists in the fact of sinfulness of men. The second category, material principles, consists in sovereignty in individualspheres , organism not aggregate , and freedom in spiritual development . These principles led to his position which emphasized the influences and the continuity of communities which had been formed by blood ties and history. His principles also made him confine the desirable role of the state to rather limited areas and require the state interventions to be limited in terms of time and scope. His ideas highlight the importance of
communities vis-a-vis individuals as the main entity based on which the socio-economic phenomena are to be understood and also support gradual approaches in solving to social problems.
